Composer and arranger Chumei Watanabe , who wrote the music for the anime Mazinger Z and many other special effects works, died of heart failure due to old age at 4am on 23 March, aged 96. In response, singer Ichiro Mizuki, who composed the Mazinger Z theme song, updated his Twitter page to mourn his passing.
On Twitter, Mizuki posted a photo with Mr. Watanabe , saying:
"I was shocked and speechless at the sudden news of Mr. Watanabe's death. His songs, including Mazinger Z, have transcended time and borders and are loved by fans all over the world. If I had not met him, I would not be where I am today. He has been active throughout his life. Thank you so much for all you have done for me. I pray from the bottom of my heart that you rest in peace.
